Kindly Put is about the conversations families avoid: the mother-in-law who rearranges your kitchen, the sister who asks for money in front of everyone, the parent whose visits have no end date.

Most writing about this either refuses to say who is being unreasonable, or entertains you with someone else’s drama and leaves you exactly where you started. We do two things instead: we take a side, and we hand you the words.

What you will find here

Scripts you can copy into a text message without editing. Honest stories about people who had to use them. And, always, what the boundary is going to cost — a cold Christmas, a sibling who stops calling. Advice that will not name the price is not advice.

What we are not

We are not therapists, lawyers or doctors, and nothing here is therapy, legal or medical advice. Where a situation involves abuse or danger, we say so plainly and point to people who are qualified to help.

Who writes it

Kindly Put is a small independent publication. Every article is planned, edited and approved by a person before it is published — see our editorial policy and how we use AI.
